Support and Advice from TNPC's Parenting Experts

How to feed a newborn is something every new mother must think about. There are some definite advantages to breast feeding that you might want to consider if you’re trying to decide.

• It’s the perfect food for your baby. It’s fresh and readily available. Your milk doesn’t have to be warmed up. It’s cheap. In fact, it’s free. Mother’s milk also passes along immunities to a newborn.

• Bottle feeding has its advantages too. Infant formulas do provide adequate nutrition. A father can be more actively involved in child care and feeding. And Mom is less restricted by the baby’s feeding schedule.

This is a big decision. My hope is that every mother will give nursing a chance. It doesn’t always come naturally, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. The Leche League is a support group for nursing mothers that’s available to everyone. If you try it, and it still doesn’t seem right for you, switch to bottle feeding and don’t feel guilty. Formula fed infants do grow and thrive, and the same close bond will develop between you and your baby.
